Latest Updates on GST for 2025: Simplified and Easy to Understand

Here are the key changes in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system for 2025, explained in simple terms:

1. Simplified Tax Slabs

  • Old System: 4 main tax rates (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%).

  • 2025 Update: Reduced to 3 slabs – 5%, 12%, and 18%.

    • Impact: Fewer confusion, easier compliance for businesses.

    • Exception: Luxury/sin goods (like cigarettes, cars) still taxed at 28%.

2. Easier Compliance for Small Businesses

  • Annual Turnover Limit Increased: Businesses earning up to ₹2 crore (previously ₹1.5 crore) can opt for the Composition Scheme.

    • Benefit: Pay fixed GST (e.g., 1% for traders) and file returns quarterly instead of monthly.

3. GST Rate Changes for Restaurants in Hotels 145

  • Old Rule: GST for in-hotel restaurants was based on the "declared tariff" (published room rates, excluding discounts).

  • 2025 Update: GST now depends on the actual room tariff charged in the preceding financial year:

    • If room tariff > ₹7,500/day: Restaurants in these hotels (called "specified premises") must charge 18% GST with Input Tax Credit (ITC).

    • If room tariff ≤ ₹7,500/day: Restaurants can opt for 5% GST without ITC or 18% GST with ITC by filing a declaration.

    • Example: A hotel that charged ₹8,000/night in 2024–25 will automatically fall under the 18% GST bracket for its restaurant in 2025–26.

  • Voluntary Opt-In for "Specified Premises"

  • Hotels with room tariffs below ₹7,500 can voluntarily opt for 18% GST with ITC by submitting an "opt-in" declaration:

    • Deadline: Declarations must be filed between January 1 and March 31 of the preceding financial year.

    • Benefit: Access to ITC on inputs like raw materials, utilities, and services, reducing operational costs.

    • Drawback: Higher GST rates may deter price-sensitive customers.

4. New GST Rules for Online Sellers

  • E-commerce Platforms: Must deduct 1% TCS (Tax Collected at Source) on all seller transactions.

5.Healthcare & Education Remain Tax-Free

  • Hospitals/Schools: No GST on healthcare services or education fees.

    • New Rule: GST of 5% on expensive private hospital rooms (above ₹5,000/day).

Final Takeaway: The 2025 GST updates focus on simplicity, promoting green energy, and cracking down on tax evasion. Small businesses and eco-friendly buyers benefit the most!
